Valentine’s Day – February 14 also called Saint Valentine feast, recognized as a celebration of love, agape, or romance around the world. Although most people term it to be a romantic kind of love celebration, it was originally a Western Christian feast day.
Established in AD 496 by Pope Gelasius I in honour of Saint Valentine of Rome who was imprisoned and executed on February 14 of AD 269 for performing weddings for soldiers forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted by the Roman empire.
According to ancient stories, it is believed that Valentine healed his judge blind daughter, and converted and baptised about 20 0r so people of the judge house by doing this.
He wrote her a letter signed “Your Valentine” as a Farewell before his execution, and that brought about the Valentine’s love letters we have today ending with “Your Valentine” instead of “Yours Faithfully or Sincerely”.
As of the 18th century in England, Valentine’s day has become very much associated with romantic love whereby people propose love to each other, get gifts and do things only couples would do.
Although not a public holiday anywhere in the world, but its celebration is almost rivals that of Easter, everyone wants to have a Val, someone to call their own and spend that day splendidly with.
So get ready for February 14, make sure it’s a day your partner/Val never forgets, let love flow and let that day be the start of something new.
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart”- Helen Keller.
